The recent Nirbhaya case caused a massive uproar in the city. People mourned the death of the girl, were furious with the state authorities and the police, cursed and abused the men who committed the horrendous act, suggesting different torturous means of killing the accused. Whatever happened was unheard, unexpected and uncalled for.
I was in the midst of drama rehearsals when I got to hear of this, at that time the gravity of the situation didn't strike me, the sheer brutality and sadistic pleasure derived by those men in literally butchering the girl who all she did was resist them assaulting her. On getting home and hearing the lengthy descriptions of the situation being flashed in the news channels I was shocked. I sat there watching the footage of the protests dumb struck.
There was a lump stuck in my throat. I wanted to cry out. The pain of listening to what they did to her was unbearable, i can't even imagine the agony and the plight of that young lady. I sat at the edge of my bed... listening... observing... but something in that visual image made me go mad with anger... made my blood boil...
We protest.. we scream... and in the very next instance we look at our women as commodities...!! WHY?? Are we a sex starved nation?? Or is it the pleasure of the forbidden fruit that drives our people to such violence... to such extremities... against women who may be someone's daughter, someones sister?? When it comes to our own families we want them.protected, sheilded, safe... but we can tease, stalk, rape others sisters, wives and mothers?
What kind of hypocrites is this nation giving birth to.. on one hand we are an advanced nation with equal rights for men and women and on the other hand our women are not free to step out of their houses after dark or even for that matter in the daylight without fearing their safety.
I used to date a boy a few years back who termed me a "slut" for the simple reason that I had male friends who I spoke to on social networking sites on a regular basis. This very gent was there... protesting and shouting slogans after the Nirbhaya incident. Do I need to state anything else to prove that 70% of the male population in our nation is a race of hypocrites. Everyday in the buses/metros men try to touch women. Try to grope them or their breasts. Some of them even try to run their lil piss pump onto the backs and shoulders of female co-passengers These are perhaps very small incident...
If the entire nation was truly shocked over such a massive crime why has the reporting of rape cases not gone down but increased manifold instead... 4 year old raped... 6 year old raped... how disgusting can men get. An innocent baby who probably doesn't even realise that she is being molested... doesn't their conscience ever prick them.. What do such people eat or drink that kills their conscience. How can their heart and mind allow them to even commit such a hideous deed. I still haven't figured it out and probably never will be able to... but I wait in hope that someday someone will figure it out and put an end to it. Till then we've got to live in this world full of hypocrisy....!!
